課程概述

The aim of this course is to give the students the overview they need to be able to put regional paleoenvironmental changes into a global perspective, and to relate local and regional events to the evolution of neighboring areas.

In order to fully understand global change, it is necessary to have a well founded knowledge about when, where, and why important paleoceanographic and climatic changes took place. In this course, emphasis will be put on both knowing when and where significant changes in the ocean system took place, and also on what consequences these changes had for neighboring basins as well as the global climate system. Emphasis will lie on the Cenozoic, and particularly on the phenomena of the Quaternary period, especially the theory of orbital variations in insolation as pacemaker of the ice ages. In this course we will discuss the modern geography and oceanography of the major oceanic basins, as well as the marine geological evolution of the basins, the paleoceanography of the various oceans and how the paleoceanographic evolution of the ocean basins relate to climatic changes and the global paleoenvironmental evolution of the Earth.

The course should also contribute to a better understanding of the most important paleoceanographic proxies and the major paleoceanographic events and their relationships to stratigraphy and sedimentary facies.

***Not open in course pre-registration period. ***

課程要求
Intended for advanced undergraduate, and graduate students with an interest in paleoceanography, the history of the Earth’s climate, and how the climate system works. No formal prerequisites, but earlier participation in courses related to Paleoceanography or Paleoclimatolog and/or a strong interest in climatology and global change would be beneficial.
